Boo at the Zoo

Finally, I'm getting these photos posted! The weekend prior to Halloween Scott and I took the kids to Boo at the Zoo, in the Quad-Cities.

The Kids dressed up in their costumes as Indiana Jones. Or as we liked to call them Illinois Jones and Iowa Jones. They let me get a few shots off before we headed to the zoo....

Ian makes sure his whip skills are tip top..
While our intrepid adventurer Jamie is a less sure of the whole affair.....
Until he remembers the candy involved in.
Indiana Ian really gets into the act.
And Indiana Jamie gives his whip skills a work out.
At the zoo, Scott's true nature is revealed....
...and it's obvious the nut doesn't fall far from the tree...
After a brief stint as monkeys, we moved on the see the elephants. The star shaped brand on one of the elephants signals that she was born in a logging camp.

I don't think they feed that animal enough... he looks too thin...
The kids enjoyed feeding the fish and the waterfowl. I don't think there are enough quarters in the world, they could have spent $100 feeding the critters.
There's another one of those skinny animals...
Nessie even hangs out in the pond, she never once begged for food, though.
The mallard ducks were sort of aloof, too.
But not the white duck, she was happy to beg at the side of the deck, and she was willing to fight for every bit of food she got!
A face only a mother could love.
Our fearless adventurer wrangled the pig outside the petting zoo and tamed him well.
Inside the petting zoo the goat whisperer found a girlfriend. This nanny loved Scott.
The llama on the other hand just looked at us with disdain... at least he did not spit at my camera.
A pygmy goat enjoying a crunchy leaf that he got from...
... Jamie. Who found a cheaper way to feed the critters.
In the Australian Walkabout, we saw an Emu and a wallaby...

And an Emu set its sights on Jamie's candy bag
The Jones boys took a break from animal watching to have a more modern adventure...

Before we visited Africa, where we saw macaws in the aviary.
And zebras outside.

And A few more birds on our way to visit the ....
... giraffes. The Four giraffes where confined to a small area, because their pen was really muddy. I felt bad for them, but it certainly made them easier to photograph.

The lions don't look stressed out do they?
I wish I slept so soundly.
The puma was having a nap.
Every time the train passed us Ian wanted to go straight to it to be sure he got to ride.
We took our time and visited all the big cats, only the Tiger was awake.

In the bobcat enclosure one of the occupants demonstrated that a cat is a cat no matter the size.

This wolf was watching over the others in the enclosure.

We compared our wingspans to other birds of prey..
... both the boys are peregrine falcons.
Too small to be bald eagles. Too much hair too. We visited the bald eagles. While he looks angry and impressive in this picture, he was only one of those things. Impressive , yes. Angry, no. He was yawning.

We moved on to see the black bear having a snack, he made short work of that pile of apples.
The mountain goats were all hanging out on their mountain.

As we headed for the train our smallest adventurer ran out of steam, and had to hop a ride on a daddy.
The clown loads the train with passengers and then acts as engineer.

Refreshed from the ride Indiana Jamie shows off his skills as an adventurer.
But the locals are not impressed...

A short jaunt up the hill to watch the train go past was the last crusade at the zoo.
We left and went to dinner at Outback, and then ice cream at Whitey's.

A day late and a dollar short...

And almost a month behind!!

Its been a busy month with house guests and various goings on. My brother Scotty had a birthday early in the month. The boys and I went to dinner with Scotty, Tiffany, Nana, Poppy and Uncle Glen.

Nana and Poppy brought the kids a couple of Indiana Jones toy Whips that they had found at Walmart, to go with the Halloween costumes. The whips play the theme song, and make the whip cracking noise.

I'm not making Duct tape and Cardboard contraptions for Halloween this year. It's kind of liberating. Sort Of.

However, I do have to take two scary red velvet zoot suit pimp hats and make them brown so the boys look like Indiana Jones, rather than Pimp-diana Jones. Got paint, should be a fun and exasperating experience for tomorrow. Or later tonight...

The neighbor and I have looked into getting hold of a mini-donkey for my house. Mini-Donkeys are coyote stompers. And frankly, I value the kitties more than the coyotes. We have all ready had some kitty disappearances... no evidence of where they went exactly. But my guess is coyotes.

This weekend the kids want to go to Boo at the Zoo. Last year Carol came to visit with her boys and they joined us. Maybe Daddy will make it this year.

On Sunday we have Trunk or Treat at School. It was fun last year. Hope the weather is nice!

That's all for now.. better get dinner made.

Knock on Wood

I had the flu, or something like it for a week... I don't think the kids got it...

Thank God Almighty! I don't know how they didn't get it.. but praise God for small favors.

Thank You Lord.

Stearman Fly-in and Playing Catch-up

I'm a little behind....

Every September, the airport in our little city host the annual Stearman Fly-in. They sit on the field at the airport lined up inrows. And they take to the skies daily, the skies around us are home to these planes for that week. They buzz around, alone in pairs or in formations of four, or five. Despite the trees around our place, we see quite a few of them, and we can always hear them coming. This year I took quite a number of photos of them, I felt very much like a cross between a stalker and a mad woman, I would drive the scenic route home and as soon as I heard the buzzing of one of their engines I'd pull off the road to shoot off a few pictures. I'll admit I missed lots of pictures when I could not get off the road safely. And I did control the urge to try to shoot and drive...

The boys get all excited for Stearman days now that we live south of the airport, because so many of the planes fly over us.

Both last year and this year both the Peoria Air National Guard has brought their C-130 Hercules up to the Fly-in. The boys have been up in the cockpit to look around , they think it is pretty cool.
This year they got to sit in the seat of a Stearman.

They were a little jealous of my Birthday present. My first plane ride ever. The pilot, Cody, asked if I wanted to go any specific direction, and so we flew past the house.
I can see how having a plane and a camera could get addictive and expensive, very quickly. I wonder if I could get free rides if I hung around the airport with my camera and a plate of brownies?

Do you remember the game telephone?

Where you sit in a circle and whisper a phrase to the person next to you and after the information has traveled the circle, you see how much it has changed? Real life isn't much different.

For more than a week now we have had some unexpected guests at our house, Kenny and Dee. Its a long involved and strange story. Suffice it to say the game of telephone and misinformation has played a part. It isn't really a problem to have two extra people around. Although I'm having a darn hard time realizing how much more food two more people can go through. I'm working on fostering my generous spirit, because sometimes I can still be quite grinchy of heart. Usually, it is without good reason. What's one wet towel in the laundry? No big deal. And so what if we have used 4 loaves of bread? It is just bread, and currently, we have it to share.

Kenny has been looking for things to do outside around the place, The day they showed up he found an patched two holes in my fence for me. The next day he finished the chicken pen for my Ameracauna chickens. Over the weekend, he helped Scott rebuild a section of fence. And He has been mowing and weed whacking around the yard in the places that need it. Kenny is one of those people that needs something to do, if he is up he takes the dog out, and feeds the cats and lets teh chickens out. all those things I have to do. Dee is no problem either, offers to do dishes laundry, whatever.

I think my inner grinch has given up. I think it has realized it cant win this fight, because I have realized in a very real way that there is no other choice. We could not, not take in Kenny and Dee, we could not say well sorry, no car, no home, too bad. We just could not do that.

Currently, Scott and a couple of his leased drivers are working on getting a contract to haul wind turbine parts. The blades and the towers. It's a 6 month contract that could pay quite a but of money. We could get out of debt completely if we get this contract. And have $ to start a 401k and college savings for the kids. Please shoot up a prayer for us. This contract would employ Scott, Robert, Kenneth, Kenny and Dee, for 6 months, and pay for a heavy haul truck needed for the job. Plus it would open the door to getting the next contract. Please keep it in your prayers.

Please and Thank You.

The Hurrier I go the Behinder I get.

Isn't that just the way life is? I have a post about the the first week of school sitting in my drafts, but I have not gotten to look close at the pictures from the first day so I can treat you all to a post with pictures. I may actually get to it today, but I'm thinking no one should hold their breathe. The stearman planes keep buzzing around as they go to and from the airport, and I'd like to sit on the road out side and just shoot pictures of them...

Maybe by weeks end I'll have some exciting photos of the planes!

Do You think I could get them to model it?

If I win one?

Go to http://yayapapayatutus.blogspot.com/ and register to win a free tutu.

If I win, I'll be looking for little girls to use as photo guinea pigs. Those are just too cute.
